Therapeutic Massage at The Bampton Clinic

What is therapeutic massage?

Massage is one of the oldest, simplest forms of therapy. Therapeutic massage is a system of stroking, pressing and kneading different areas of the body to relieve pain, relax, stimulate and tone.

It is an intuitive collaboration between art and science evolved from our own natural instinct to rub a site of pain. We can trace the history of massage through Ancient China, Egypt and India; the wisdom from these cultural traditions is reflected in their respective development of this therapeutic form.

Western massage was first found in Socratic Greece. Much later it was developed by the 19th-century Swedish doctor, poet and educator, Per Henrik Ling. Ling’s clinical work on soft-tissue massage on athletes was ground-breaking and he combined these new techniques with practices drawn from ancient cultures to create the foundations of the massage therapy we use today.

What does treatment involve?

If you are currently undergoing medical treatment, you may be asked to consult with your GP first. The clinic’s practitioner is happy to treat children from the age of ten upward, accompanied by an appropriate adult.

All sessions can be adjusted to accommodate your individual preference and comfort, but your first treatment will follow this general pattern:

The first treatment lasts for an hour and a half. It will start with a detailed consultations with questions about your medical history, general health, vitality and emotional well-being. This helps to determine your individual therapeutic requirements.

Following the consultation, you will be given privacy to undress and cover yourself with towels to ensure your modesty is protected at all times. The first massage is usually a full-body treatment, which may include a massage of the back, neck, legs, face, arms, hands, abdomen and feet.

The practitioner uses a range of classical techniques derived from the system of Swedish massage, complemented by deep tissue and lymphatic drainage techniques. This treatment covers a wide spectrum of healing requirements from deep work on specific problem areas to whole body reconditioning.
