Heat absorbing stones have been used for pain relief all over the world for over 5,000 years.
The stones are commonly basalt and smoothed by river water erosion. They retain heat and are of many different sizes.
The hot stone massage is not being rubbed by rocks, the therapist warms their hands by holding the stones before massaging the body.
The stones are heated in a water bath and the therapist continuously checks the temperature is comfortable. The heat enables the muscles to relax more quickly than a conventional massage thereby improving circulation at a deeper level resulting in less soreness and a longer benefit.
Most patients report feeling tension, stiffness and pain “melting away”. The stones can be left on areas of the body which really need the heat, for example under shoulders, back of neck, lower back and abdomen. There are even little stones that fit between the toes and really boost blood to cold feet.
The initial session will involve a medical case history as well as the massage will take up to an hour and half.
Follow on massages are an hour.
